SA Weekend

Do I have the inside scoop for you today! If you’ve been having a bad day, this post is guaranteed to make you smile (at least just a little by the end of it).

This past weekend we had our annual Student Association (SA) activities. It started with each class getting their class shirts, which is one of my favorite things about being here. You always get merch with your name on it! I mean, how cool is that?

In the girls’ dorm, we turned one of the Junior girl’s rooms into a hair salon. It’s a tradition for all the girls in our class to get ready together and get their hair done in the same style. If you were there, you would have seen girl after girl with face paint matching our class shirts, and hair in two beautiful braids (I was an exception, since my hair is three inches long). You’d be surprised to see how close a bunch of girls can get, especially since we just met each other a little over a week ago. The guys probably played foosball and waited until the games started.

As the night went on, you could hear all the classes clapping in unison and the wonderful sound of people bonding. Not that I have a biased opinion, but I think the Junior class did exceptionally well (I am a Junior this year, in case I forgot to mention that). With our ginormous class, it was hard not to be the loudest. The night went on with a scavenger hunt, basketball relays, headstand contests, staff relay games, and ended off with a rendition of Old McDonald had a Farm (in which I wore a dinosaur costume). Luckily for you, there will be photos all over our Facebook and Instagram

Our weekend didn’t end there. We went back to the dorms and rested in order to get ready for the following day full of even more activities. This time, it was based on our teamwork skills and we participated in all the events as a school and not just individual classes. We had an obstacle course in which each class linked arms and faced all the challenges together. There was a human knot game that required a lot of leadership skills, and there was a school-wide game of tug of war (even the staff participated). There was a slip and slide for us to cool off in, and for dinner, we had amazing vegetarian burgers with ice cream.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”. And we did exactly that. We clapped louder and cheered more enthusiastically as the last person finished each obstacle. We made sure others ate first. When someone fell, we stopped the game and waited for them to get back up. We will strive to continue to do that every day here at Great Lakes Adventist Academy because this is a school of unity, and it begins with us. Right here, right now.
