Bible Camp

By: Stephanie Martinez

Every weekend here is full of adventure; whether it be relay games in the gym, or going a few hours north for a weekend full of nature and Jesus. February 19-21 we had the luxury of going camping and being off-campus for a while. Nothing can compare to the times we get to spend together as a student body, just messing around in the snow and attending worship together.

It started with us loading into our busses and enjoying a short road trip to Camp Au Sable in Grayling, Michigan. Road trips in my opinion are always the best part. You get to see all the trees as the bus drives by, and it’s so peaceful. After we got up to camp, we settled into our cabins. Although it was a bit icy, we all managed to cling to each other for support, to keep from falling. We were all immediately hit with the presence of God, and we were thrilled to be there.

One of the best things at camp hands down was the food. Chef Miguel does amazing things with seasonings. Who knew lentils could be that good? Camp food just hits different, especially when you’re constantly moving around as we did. There were so many activities, and places to go. Some students went cross country skiing or sledding, and some went on walks. If you’ve been to Camp Au Sable before, then you’re familiar with the famous boardwalk. Imagine walking at night, with all the stars revealing themselves while you enjoy the brisk air. Then, out of nowhere, a group of boys come running behind you yelling as if they’re coming to attack you. Mind you, the walk is covered with snow and some of it is slippery. I wish I could say that I, a sixteen-year-old wasn’t scared out of my mind, but that would be a lie.

Camp Au Sable is known for its ability to give campers both an amazing adventure, and an impeccable spiritual experience. The best of both worlds right? We had night after night filled with powerful talks, and significant points about what we can do better in our spiritual walk with God. One of our students, Alex made a really good point about how teaching defines our character, and how Jesus didn’t let His prosecutors define who He was; He let them define who Jesus wasn’t. Following all the worships, we had free time and freedom to just walk around, find an empty seat somewhere in nature, and sit down with God.

My favorite part about Bible Camp was talking to all the people I normally didn’t talk to. I got closer to the people in my class, and upperclassmen who I was so intimidated by. I now know that all upperclassmen are just as scared as everyone else when it comes to growing up, probably even more. It was an amazing experience. There is never a dull weekend here at GLAA, and I hope soon you can all join us for these moments and memories in the making.
